De Shelby Mustang is een high-performance variant van de Ford Mustang, gebouwd door Shelby American van 1965 tot 1967 en door Ford Motor Company van 1968 tot 1970. Deze Shelby 350GT is de eerste Shelby waar in Europa historisch mee werd geraced vanaf 1988.

Winnaar van de Tour Auto 1999 en deel van het winnend team bij Le Mans Classic 2002.

Serienummer SFM6S108 is één van de 252 Shelby’s uit 1965 waar de zijruitjes en remscoops van de 1966 auto’s voor het eerst werden toegepast.

De 350GT heeft geraced in de Coppa d’Italia, Tour Auto, op Goodwood, Monza, Zandvoort, Dijon, Spa, Assen, Nurburgring, Hockenheim etc.

Carroll Hall Shelby was een Amerikaanse auto-ontwerper, autocoureur en ondernemer. In 1962 richtte hij Shelby American op om prestatievoertuigen te produceren.

Shelby was onder de indruk van de snelheid van de sportwagens waar hij zelf tijdens zijn internationale race carrière in reed, maar niet van de onbetrouwbare motoren die constant onderhoud en reparaties vereisten. Met dit idee in zijn achterhoofd wilde hij een sportwagen bouwen die Europese rijeigenschappen en balans bood met een Amerikaanse V-8 motor die gemakkelijk kon worden onderhouden bij elke autodealer of onafhankelijke garage maar verkopen voor de helft van de prijs van die van Europese merken. Carroll Shelby’s idee werd werkelijkheid toen hij hoorde dat AC Cars in Groot-Brittannië de motorleverancier voor hun Bristol sportwagen was kwijtgeraakt. Shelby nam contact op met AC Cars en vertelde hen zijn idee. Ze waren enthousiast en zeiden dat hij maar weer contact moest opnemen als hij een motorfabrikant had gevonden. Shelby stelde zijn sportwagen voor aan Ford Motor Company, die het een goed idee vond om een sportwagen aan te bieden die het opnam tegen de Chevrolet Corvette. De Ford Mustang was een enorm verkoopsucces toen hij in het voorjaar van 1964 werd geïntroduceerd. Lee Iacocca, algemeen directeur van de Ford-divisie, was echter bezorgd dat de Mustang, hoewel hij goed verkocht, geen prestatie-imago had en niet paste in het Total Performance-marketingprogramma van de Ford-divisie.

Om het imagoprobleem op te lossen, belde Iacocca Carroll Shelby en vroeg hem of hij van de Mustang een sportauto kon maken met een winnend prestatie-imago. Het resultaat was de Shelby Mustang GT350 uit 1965. Deze nieuwste prestatieauto van Shelby American verdiende zijn sportieve en prestatiegerichte imago op racecircuits in heel Amerika. In de B Productieklasse van de Sports Car Club of America nam de nieuwe GT350 het op tegen de Corvette Stingray, Jaguar XKE, Sunbeam Tiger en verschillende Ferrari-modellen. Hij domineerde de concurrentie en won het nationale kampioenschap B Productie van 1965, terwijl hij een prestatie-imago opbouwde voor de Ford Mustang.

Carroll Hall Shelby was an American car designer, racing driver and entrepreneur. In 1962, he founded Shelby American to produce performance cars.
Shelby was impressed by the speed of the sports cars he himself drove during his international racing career, but not by the unreliable engines that required constant maintenance and repairs. With this idea in mind, he wanted to build a sports car that offered European handling and balance with an American V-8 engine that could be easily serviced at any car dealer or independent garage but sell for half the price of those from European brands. Carroll Shelby’s idea became a reality when he heard that AC Cars in Britain had lost the engine supplier for their Bristol sports car. Shelby contacted AC Cars and told them his idea. They were enthusiastic and told him to get back in touch when he had found an engine manufacturer. Shelby presented his sports car to Ford Motor Company, which liked the idea of offering a sports car to take on the Chevrolet Corvette. The Ford Mustang was a huge sales success when it was introduced in the spring of 1964. However, Lee Iacocca, general manager of the Ford division, was concerned that although it sold well, the Mustang lacked a performance image and did not fit into the Ford division’s Total Performance marketing programme.

To solve the image problem, Iacocca called Carroll Shelby and asked him if he could turn the Mustang into a sports car with a winning performance image. The result was the 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350. This latest performance car from Shelby American earned its sporty and performance image at race tracks across America. In the B Production class of the Sports Car Club of America, the new GT350 competed against the Corvette Stingray, Jaguar XKE, Sunbeam Tiger and several Ferrari models. It dominated the competition and won the 1965 national B Production championship, while building a performance image for the Ford Mustang.

Shelby présente sa voiture de sport à Ford Motor Company, qui apprécie l’idée de proposer une voiture de sport pour affronter la Chevrolet Corvette. La Ford Mustang est un énorme succès commercial lors de son lancement au printemps 1964. Cependant, Lee Iacocca, directeur général de la division Ford, était préoccupé par le fait que, bien qu’elle se soit bien vendue, la Mustang manquait d’une image de performance et ne s’intégrait pas dans le programme de marketing “Total Performance” de la division Ford.

Dans la classe B Production du Sports Car Club of America, la nouvelle GT350 a affronté la Corvette Stingray, la Jaguar XKE, la Sunbeam Tiger et plusieurs modèles Ferrari. Elle domine la compétition et remporte le championnat national B Production 1965, tout en construisant une image de performance pour la Ford Mustang.
