In 1984 was Ferrari begonnen aan een evolutieversie van de 288
GTO, om weerstand te bieden aan Porsches FIA Groep B-wapen: de
959. De auto die op 12 juli 1987 werd gepresenteerd kreeg de naam
F40 vanwege het veertigjarig jubileum van de fabriek. De laatste
straatauto die onder auspiciën van Enzo Ferrari tot stand kwam was
met dank aan zijn 2.936 cc-motor met 478 pk en dubbele IHI-turbo’s
met een topsnelheid van 324 km/h, de snelste productieauto ter
wereld en de eerste die de grens van 200 mph doorbrak. Hoewel
de Ferrari F40 nooit bedoeld was om mee te racen, maakte de auto
zeven jaar na de introductie toch zijn debuut in een internationale
GT-serie, om daar alsnog te schitteren.

In 1984, Ferrari began work on an evolution model of the 288 GTO to compete with Porsche’s FIA Group B weapon: the 959. The car introduced on 12 July 1987 was named F40 in honour of the factory’s 40th anniversary. Thanks to its 2,936 cc engine with 478 hp and twin IHI turbos and a top speed of 324 km/h, the last street car built under the auspices of Enzo Ferrari was the fastest production car in the world and the first to break the 200-mph barrier. Even though the Ferrari F40 was never destined to be raced, the car did make its debut in an international GT series seven years after its introduction, where it truly excelled.
