In 1970 kreeg het piepkleine De Tomaso een lucky break in de vorm
van een lucratief contract met de op één na grootste autofabrikant
ter wereld: Ford. Tom Tjaarda tekende de lijnen van wat het meest
succesvolle model uit de geschiedenis van De Tomaso zou worden.
Met de 5,8-liter V8 van Ford, was de Pantera bovendien in staat
tot indrukwekkende prestaties. De topsnelheid van 270 km/h
lag veel hoger dan die van de concurrentie. Helaas gingen de
eerste exemplaren al stuk op de testbaan, er was nauwelijks aan
roestpreventie gedaan en crashtests pakte rampzalig uit. Toen Elvis
Presley zijn Pantera letterlijk onder vuur nam omdat zijn auto niet
wilde starten, besloot De Tomaso de auto in 1972 fors te verbeteren.
Pas in 1993 stopte de productie na 7.200 verkochte exemplaren.

In 1970, the tiny De Tomaso got a lucky break in the form of a lucrative contract with the world’s second largest car manufacturer: Ford. Tom Tjaarda’s sketches would ultimately lead to the most successful model in De Tomaso history. Equipped with Ford’s 5.8-liter V8, the Pantera was also capable of impressive performance.

The top speed of 270 km/h far exceeded that of the competition. Sadly, the initial models broke down on the test track, hardly any preventive measures had been taken to stop rust, and crash tests were a downright disaster. When Elvis Presley took literal shots at his Pantera when it wouldn’t start, De Tomaso decided to make major improvements to the car in 1972. By the time production ended in 1993, 7,200 units had been sold.
