1988 besloten Benetton en Ford een andere weg in te slaan. Ondanks dat dit het laatste seizoen zou worden voor de turbomotoren, kozen ze nu al voor een atmosferische motor. Het meest ongewone kenmerk van de B188 was de ‘omgekeerde’ versnellingsbak. De versnellingen lagen tussen de motor en eindaandrijving wat resulteerde in een betere gewichtsbalans.

Opnieuw reed Thierry Boutsen voor het Italiaanse team, ditmaal naast Alessandro Nanini. Het team kende een indrukwekkend seizoen. Boutsen behaalde maar liefst 5 keer het podium, iedere keer P3. Samen behaalde ze zeven podiumplaatsen en bezorgden Benetton een derde plaats in het constructeurskampioenschap. Hiermee versloegen ze teams zoals Williams, Lotus en Tyrrell.

In 1988, Benetton and Ford decided to take a different path. Even though this would be the last season for the turbo engines, they have already opted for a naturally aspirated engine. The most unusual feature of the B188 was the ‘inverted’ gearbox. The gears were located between the engine and final drive, resulting in a better weight balance.
Once again Thierry Boutsen rode for the Italian team, this time alongside Alessandro Nanini. The team had an impressive season. Boutsen achieved the podium no fewer than 5 times, P3 each time. Together they achieved seven podium finishes and gave Benetton third place in the constructors’ championship. With this they defeated teams such as Williams, Lotus and Tyrrell.
