Lancia Stratos

1956

🇳🇱

The Lancia Stratos HF was the first sports car specifically designed for rallying. The bodywork design was created by Marcello Gandini, the chief designer at the Bertone design house. The centrally mounted 2418cc engine, sourced from the Ferrari Dino V6, produced a standard output of 140 kW, which increased to 209 kW in race trim.

The prototype of the Stratos was unveiled in 1971. Between 1972 and 1973, the Stratos was tested in various races within the Group 5 motorsport category. In 1973, 400 units were produced, fulfilling the requirement to participate in Group 4 rally events. Lancia found great success with the Stratos, winning the constructors’ title in the World Rally Championship from 1974 to 1976.

Originally developed by Bertone as a concept car for the 1970 Turin Motor Show, powered by a four-cylinder engine from the Lancia Fulvia HF 1600, the car’s radical lines soon led to its transformation into a race-ready sports car. In 1974, the Stratos was officially homologated, and that same year, it claimed its first major rally victory, including the Monte Carlo Rally. In the years following, the Stratos continued to dominate international rally events.
