Ford ontwikkelde de GT40 en versloeg Ferrari fair and square op Le Mans. Maar de kans om ooit nog Ferrari te kunnen kopen is sinds die bewuste middag voor altijd voorbij. Gelukkig gaat het met beide merken vandaag de dag nog uitstekend en gebruikt Ford de GT40 eens in de zoveel jaar als excuus om de meest extravagante en uitstekende sportauto in de markt te zetten. De vorige Ford GT was eigenlijk een iets grotere GT40 met een enorme V8 en een supercharger. Deze generatie Ford GT daarentegen, is geen retro auto maar een futuristisch ruimteschip dat na een succesvolle race op La Sartre is vergeten terug te keren naar de pits.

De Ford GT van de tweede generatie, zoals deze auto wordt aangeduid, is een auto die bij Multimatic in Canada wordt gebouwd. De basis een carbon fibre moncoque die niet alleen uiterst stijf is maar ook vederlicht. De auto werd onthuld in 2016 en Ford maakte direct kenbaar om 50 jaar na dato opnieuw een gooi te gaan doen naar de overwinning op Le Mans. De Ford GT is dus ook één van de weinige auto’s die in de basis is ontworpen als een raceauto en niet als straatauto. Dat maakt dat voor de ontwerpers de doelstellingen op voorhand bijzonder duidelijk waren: deze auto moet zo hard mogelijk op Le Mans kunnen rijden en vervolgens moeten we de auto met niet al te veel aanpassingen straat legaal kunnen maken. Tot slot mag niet onvermeld blijven dat het hier een vrijwel unieke mogelijkheid betreft om een Ford GT Carbon Series te kunnen bemachtigen. Toen Ford de orderboeken opende voor de GT was het niet zo dat jan en alleman zo’n auto kon kopen, nee, kopers moesten een heuse sollicitatieprocedure doorlopen om een Ford GT te bemachtigen. Als Ford het verhaal niet goed genoeg vond, of de koper niet bij de GT vond passen, was het niet mogelijk er een te kopen. Daarnaast was het voor kopers van de Ford GT niet toegestaan de auto kort na aanschaf weer te verkopen. Niet alleen is het bodywork voorzien van een blanke lak waardoor het carbon bodywork zichtbaar is, ook is de ophanging herzien, de aerodynamica aangepast en het vermogen opgekrikt tot 660 pk.

Fortunately, both brands are still doing very well today and Ford uses the GT40 once every few years as an excuse to launch the most extravagant and excellent sports car on the market. The previous Ford GT was actually a slightly larger GT40 with a huge V8 and a supercharger. This generation Ford GT, on the other hand, is not a retro car but a futuristic spaceship that forgot to return to the pits after a successful race at La Sartre.
The second-generation Ford GT, as this car is referred to, is a car built at Multimatic in Canada. Its base a carbon fibre moncoque that is not only extremely rigid but also featherweight. The car was unveiled in 2016 and Ford immediately announced its intention to make another bid for victory at Le Mans 50 years on.

So the Ford GT is also one of the few cars that was fundamentally designed as a race car and not a street car. This means that for the designers, the objectives were extremely clear beforehand: this car should be able to run as fast as possible at Le Mans and then we should be able to make the car street legal with not too many modifications. Finally, it should not go unmentioned that this is an almost unique opportunity to get your hands on a Ford GT Carbon Series. When Ford opened the order books for the GT, it was not that just anybody and everybody could buy such a car, no, buyers had to go through a real application process to get their hands on a Ford GT. If Ford didn’t think the story was good enough, or the buyer didn’t fit the GT, it wasn’t possible to buy one. In addition, buyers of the Ford GT were not allowed to sell the car again shortly after purchase. Not only was the bodywork given a clearcoat, revealing the carbon bodywork, the suspension was revised, the aerodynamics altered and the power boosted to 660 hp.

Heureusement, les deux marques se portent encore très bien aujourd’hui et Ford utilise la GT40 tous les deux ans comme excuse pour lancer la voiture de sport la plus extravagante et la plus excellente du marché. La précédente Ford GT était en fait une GT40 légèrement plus grande, dotée d’un énorme V8 et d’un compresseur. Cette génération de Ford GT, en revanche, n’est pas une voiture rétro mais un vaisseau spatial futuriste qui a oublié de rentrer aux stands après une course réussie à La Sartre.
La Ford GT de deuxième génération, comme on l’appelle, est une voiture construite chez Multimatic au Canada. La Ford GT est donc l’une des rares voitures à avoir été fondamentalement conçue comme une voiture de course et non comme une voiture de ville. Cela signifie que pour les concepteurs, les objectifs étaient extrêmement clairs : cette voiture doit être capable de rouler aussi vite que possible au Mans et ensuite nous devons être en mesure de rendre la voiture légale pour la route avec peu de modifications. Enfin, il ne faut pas oublier qu’il s’agit d’une occasion presque unique de mettre la main sur une Ford GT Carbon Series. Lorsque Ford a ouvert les carnets de commande pour la GT, il n’était pas question que n’importe qui puisse acheter une telle voiture, non, les acheteurs devaient passer par un véritable processus de candidature pour mettre la main sur une Ford GT. Si Ford estimait que l’histoire n’était pas assez bonne ou que l’acheteur ne correspondait pas à la GT, il n’était pas possible d’en acheter une. En outre, les acheteurs de la Ford GT n’étaient pas autorisés à revendre la voiture peu de temps après l’avoir achetée. Non seulement la carrosserie a été recouverte d’une couche transparente, révélant la carrosserie en carbone, mais la suspension a été révisée, l’aérodynamique modifiée et la puissance portée à 660 ch.
