Exhibition dedicated entirely to 100th anniversary of ‘the world’s greatest road race’
The year 2027 marks a hundred years since the first Mille Miglia started in Brescia. InterClassics Maastricht is seizing this centenary as an opportunity to dedicate the 32nd edition of the classic car show at MECC Maastricht entirely to the Mille Miglia. With the world-famous Italian long-distance race as its theme, InterClassics will bring the heroic story of ‘the world’s greatest road race’ to life in Maastricht in 2027.
Between 1927 and 1957, the Italian countryside provided the backdrop for a race of almost 1,600 kilometres on twenty-four occasions. The Mille Miglia ran from Brescia to Rome and back, travelling along public roads through villages, farmlands and over mountain passes.
The race created widespread recognition for brands such as Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Mercedes-Benz, and marked Ferrari’s official debut in 1940. The absolute highlight came in 1955, when Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson completed the route in their Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR in 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds, a record that has never been equalled.
Although serious accidents in 1957 put an end to the original high-speed race, the legend has lived on since 1977 as an exclusive regularity race for historic cars.
Mille Miglia at InterClassics Maastricht
Erik Panis, Exhibitions Manager at MECC Maastricht, explains, with a view to the anniversary year: ‘The Mille Miglia is a name that makes every car enthusiast’s heart beat faster. It is the story of drivers who drove at top speed along open roads, with the crowd just an arm’s length away. We want to pay tribute to that era with the cars and stories that made the race so great.’
Classics on the show floor
In the centenary year of the Mille Miglia, InterClassics Maastricht visitors will have the chance to get a close-up look at the cars and hear the stories that made the race famous. From pre-war Alfa Romeos to post-war sports cars from Ferrari, Maserati and Mercedes-Benz: the event brings back the era when engineering, courage and the Italian landscape came together. The most successful car from Mille Miglia history is the Alfa Romeo 8C, various models of which managed to win the race eight times and is the reason this car is pictured on the poster.
